NAPIT Welcomes Publication of CLG Select Committee Report
NAPIT today welcomes a report, produced by the Communities and Local Government Select Committee, into the certification of domestic electrical work in England.
The report makes a number of important recommendations to improve the landscape in which certification of domestic electrical work happens in England. These recommendations include requiring greater support by the Government to help ensure more effective enforcement of Part P of the Building Regulations, pressing the Government to double public awareness of Part P, keeping recent changes to Part P in England under review and recommending competence requirements to be rolled out within five years for all those doing electrical work to which Part P applies.
Commenting on the report, NAPIT Group Chief Executive, Michael Andrews, said: “We welcome many of the Select Committee’s recommendations, particularly those requesting competence on the doorstep within five years and greater powers for local authorities to enforce Part P more effectively, which is something we have long been campaigning for.
We also welcome the report’s support of the efforts NAPIT and other electrical Competent Person Schemes are currently making to improve the recognition of competent, registered electricians through the creation of one single consumer facing register and identifiable mark.
It is very encouraging to see that the Select Committee has carefully considered the evidence NAPIT Registration and the NAPIT Trade Association submitted to their call for evidence and that it took on board the views of many of the individual electricians who also took the time to make their own contributions.
I look forward to the Governments response and hope that the Select Committee’s recommendations are successful in bringing about positive, lasting change for the electrical industry and for the general public.”
