New £9,000 Grant to Replace Oil Boilers with a Heat Pump Through Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Back to Article Listing

NAPIT has welcomed news that the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is being increased from £7,500 to £9,000 for homeowners wanting to make the move from heating oil to a heat pump. The government has confirmed that households using heating oil or liquified petroleum gas (LPG) would be eligible for a new £9,000 grant to upgrade to a heat pump.

The new grant will be available from 21 July, through the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Heat pumps are increasingly popular in the UK, with over 80,000 of them sold in 2024, a record year and up 51% on the year before.

Heat pumps work like a fridge in reverse, taking heat from the air or ground, increasing it to a higher temperature and transferring it to your home to provide heating and hot water. And because they run on electricity, there is potential to make bill savings by using smart energy tariffs with cheaper off-peak rates.

You will need to meet the following criteria to be eligible for the grant:

• You must own the property - whether it’s your main home or a property you rent out

 • Your property must not be connected to the gas grid

• You must use heating oil or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to heat your home

 • Your property must be located in England or Wales

Householders can find a NAPIT member who is a certified Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) installer. If you decide to go ahead, the installer will then apply for the grant on your behalf.

The governments heat pump checker tool can be used to see if a heat pump is a good option for your next heating system. Householder can also connect with local heat pump owners near you with Nesta and hear about people’s experiences direct.

The uplift is also a great opportunity for NAPIT members to upskill and make the most of the growing demand for heat pumps.

Brett Forster, Technical and Commercial Director said: “The Boiler Upgrade Scheme uplift is a great opportunity for homeowners to switch to a heat pump and save money on their energy bills, especially for rural and off grid homes currently heating their homes by oil, providing they are installed by certified and competent installers. “
