Who Should Undertake the Programme?

  • Electricians who are looking to enhance skills and knowledge
  • IT Engineers/Technicians
  • Portable Appliance Testers (PAT) who wish to also test Fixed Appliances (FAT) and ICT Cabinets
  • Anyone with a suitable IT/ electrical/electronic NVQ Level 3 qualification who wishes to become an ICT Cabinet inspector and be able to carry out ‘In-Service
  • Inspection and Testing’ of Electrical Equipment (formally known as the PAT and FAT testing)

Why do cabinets need to be electrically tested and inspected?

  • Company Duty Holders must ensure their Network, Server and Information Communications Technology (ICT) cabinets hold a valid electrical safety documentation certificate, such as an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) or a valid in date Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC).
  • Without a valid EICR, the building and contents insurance could be invalid should an electrical fault in the ICT cabinet cause loss of data, serious fire, injury or death – with the Duty Holder being accountable.
  • Under EaWR, BS 7671:2018 and the IET Code of Practice for In-Service inspection and testing of electrical equipment (2020: 5th Edition), an ICT cabinet needs to meet electrical safety regulations. To reference please see below.

Common ICT Cabinet Electrical Safety Failings:

  • Incorrect earth size used Incorrect or no isolator installed
  • No emergency power cut-off
  • Poor cable management
  • ICT cabinet room used for storage – no air conditioning, circulation or ventilation
  • ICT cabinet not secured
  • Incorrect main circuit- breaker or fuse rating being used
  • Incorrect cable size from
  • PDUs High earth leakage present
  • Maximum earth fault loop impedance above the max permitted values mandated standard (BS 7671:2018)
  • Lack of safety labelling i.e. laser, dual power, safety earth, and functional earth

What Can You Do To Help?

  • Electrically inspect and test a cabinet(s) to ensure it conforms to the latest electrical safety standard and regulation
  • Conduct any remedial work so that the ICT cabinet meets the latest electrical safety standard and regulation
  • Provide an EICR upon successful completion of the electrical safety test and inspection.
  • During the course, you will be shown how to interpret and implement the standards of BS 7671:2018 in relation to ICT Cabinets. You will be trained how to carry out ‘In-Service Inspections and Testing of Electrical Equipment’. This will enable you to understand the appropriate regulations for the installation of ICT Equipment in various locations such as server rooms, data centres and work/office locations
  • Undertake an Electrical Safety inspection and testing of ICT Cabinets and IT installations, producing an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) or an Electrical Installationpection Condition Report (EICR), and if required, carry out electrical remedial work to recertify correct defects in an existing installation or to self-certify a new installation
  • Fixed Appliance Testing (FAT): Undertake annual FAT tests in a commercial or domestic environment, such as cookers, hand dryers etc
  • Portable Appliance Testing (PAT): Undertake annual PAT tests in a commercial or domestic environment
