Description
Fire alarms and emergency lighting play an integral role in enhancing our safety. In the commercial sector, proper fire safety precautions are a legal requirement.
You will cover the aspects of how to design, install, test and inspect a range of fire alarm and emergency lighting technologies, gaining the vital knowledge that will help you ensure your work complies with the relevant British Standards.
Programme Structure
This Programme Covers (Over 3 Days)
This programme will provide an overview of the relevant British Standards for these technologies, covering:
- Legislation under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and The Building Regulations 2000
- BS 5839-1:2017 Part 1 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings
- BS 5839-6:2019 Part 6 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings (domestic)
- BS 5266-1:2016 Emergency lighting
- BS 5266-8:2004 Emergency escape lighting systems
- BS EN 1838:2013 Lighting applications - Emergency lighting
- BS EN 1838:2013 Lighting applications - Emergency lighting
During the course you will cover subjects such as
- System categories
- System design
- False alarms
- Installation, commissioning and maintenance
- Users responsibilities
- Inspection & servicing
This programme is classroom based and includes theory assessment and practical exercises on custom made rigs with assessments taking place during the programme.
The assessments which are completed during the programme and a two-fold process:
- Theory - The fire alarm theory assessment is a paper based multiple choice assessment. The emergency lighting assessment is a paper based, multiple choice paper assessment. (the assessment is an open book)
- Practical assessment - Includes carrying out the inspection and fault finding on a two-zone fire alarm pane

- Copies of the British Standards are available for use during the programme if candidates do not hold their own copy.
