Supporting Women in The Electrical Industry

NAPIT’s Technical Director, Frank Bertie MIET, answers questions on females in the electrical industry on behalf of NAPIT for wholesaler QVS Direct’s new campaign to support and get more women involved in the electrical industry

Could you tell us a bit about NAPIT and what you do?

NAPIT have been established for 25 years as one of the leading Government approved and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited membership scheme operators in the building services and fabric sectors. We have over 10, 000 registered installers with us in a range of trades covering the electrical, heating, plumbing, ventilation, microgeneration and building fabric trades across the UK domestic, commercial and industrial markets. NAPIT is committed to raising standards and safety within the building services sector.

Do you have a background in the trades? If so, could you tell us a bit about it?

I served an electrical installation apprenticeship in Scotland progressing managing sites and carrying out inspection & testing of installations. Moving to London in the late 80’s I set up an inspection & testing company and in the early 90’s I was one of the founding members of NAPIT to improve the inspection & testing and installation competence of electrical installers.

Do you think trades still have a 'job for the boys' mentality? If so, why?

In many ways, yes it does. The trades are generally targeted and sold to young men looking for careers not women.

What do you think needs to be done to change this?

More could be done at school/ college level to encourage young women that the electrical industry is a place where they can also prosper.

What advice would you give to women considering a trade?

To go for it. Whatever trade that might be as long as they gain the right skills and qualifications, they can prosper. They shouldn’t be put off by the stigma of the trades being for men. Gender is irrelevant, it’s about competence, quality and confidence in the skills they have and how well they execute them.

Does NAPIT offer any specific help or support for women?

All our support and benefit services are accessible to all of our membership regardless of gender. We actively share the story of our female members and their successes in our bi-monthly magazine, The Competent Person, and are eager to join any campaigns that encourage women to get into the industry, and share these across our online platforms.
