Electrical Inspector Scheme membership is tailored to the work you or your employees do. The Scheme covers the production of Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) in domestic, commercial and industrial buildings.
The inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations underpin electrical safety in all situations, at home and in the workplace. While government approved schemes focus on new installation work, much of the inspection and testing work is actually carried out to ensure ongoing safety and this NAPIT Scheme promotes the use of competent, professional inspector and testers to consumers and industry. All work must be completed by someone with sufficient competence.

Relevant Standards -
Electrical Inspection work must be carried out in accordance with BS7671.
Legal Requirements -
Employers and Landlords have obligations to ensure the electrical safety of systems and equipment in their properties. These are stated in the Electricity at Work Regulations and the Landlord and Tenant Act and other associated legislation. Competence is required by this legislation and the use of an independent, registered inspector is often the most suitable way of ensuring compliance.
Qualifications -
For Electrical Inspector scheme work you or your employees must have qualifications (or equivalent) covering core electrical installation, wiring regulations and periodic inspection and testing. Individuals who already meet these requirements via CPS, EAS or TPC scheme membership would be eligible to add Electrical Inspector scheme work. See the NAPIT Guide to Qualifications – Electrical for lists of suitable qualifications which can be found on the NAPIT website.
Insurance -
You must have £2m public liability insurance and at least £250,000 professional indemnity insurance with a scope of cover that reflects the work carried out and building type involved.
Instruments -
You or your employees must have access to sufficient instruments to carry out tests relevant to your scope of work as well as in date calibration certificates for this equipment where applicable.
Inspection -
For Electrical Inspector scheme work you or your employees will have to have 3 reports evaluated for each building type in your scope (domestic, commercial, industrial) during your annual assessment visit.
Website Listing -
Once successfully registered, your business will be added to the dedicated Electrical Inspector category of the NAPIT online search facility.
How these Inspection & Testing Schemes relate to CPS, EAS and TPC
If you are registered under any of the schemes demonstrating electrical competence (CPS Full Scope Electrical, EAS or TPC) you will already meet most of the criteria for the Electrical Inspector scheme.
For Electrical Inspector scheme work you or your employees will need to verify that your qualifications are at a level covering periodic inspection and testing not just verification work (list 9 in the NAPIT Guide to Qualifications - Electrical).
You can apply for Electrical Inspector membership as a standalone scheme without joining CPS, EAS or TPC.
