NAPIT PROUDLY ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR LONGEST LIVING MEMBER
NAPIT proudly acknowledge their longest living member, who is still working on a daily basis!
Sidney Walker, known as Rowley, is an electrical contractor at the ripe old age of 86. Mr. Walker from Humberton in north-east Lincolnshire joined the industry in 1936, he is now currently responsible for electrical maintenance at a holiday park in Cleethorpes.
Having the right skills and being trained correctly is important to him. He makes the most of NAPIT training and has taken his City & Guilds 2391 theory and is hoping to take his City & Guilds 2382.
Mr. Walker says: “I like to keep busy and while I can still manage to do the job I want to carry on as long as I am medically able. I also do all my VAT and office work. It keeps the brain active. I am a keen amateur radio enthusiast and like to work with all things electrical.”
The Beachcomber Holiday Park with its 500 static holiday homes, restaurant and clubhouse has been a client of Walker Electrical and Mechanical Engineering since 1949. With a sub-station, large switch room and the usual daily tasks associated with the holiday park, there’s more than enough to keep Mr. Walker and his assistant Jim Woodhouse busy at the site over a four day week.
Jim is a mere 70 years old and first joined the business as an apprentice when he was a strapping lad of 18. Mr. Walker has long given up domestic work. His wife Audrey would like him to retire but he has no intention of doing so yet.
NAPIT field officer Michael Collinge says that Mr. Walker is a fine example to electrical contractors everywhere: “He’s a fantastic bloke. He’s had such an interesting career. He told me once that during World War 2 he served as an electrician repairing aircraft at 35,000 feet. He’s had such an amazing life as an electrical contractor.”
