NAPIT TRAINING BOND EXTRAORDINARY PARTNERSHIPS TO OFFER PART P COURSES
NAPIT Training Ltd has continued to expand due to their high quality courses on offer, guided by experienced instructors achieving high pass rates for individuals wishing to further their skills and qualifications.
From providing training courses in their Head Office in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, NAPIT began to extend their reach around the country by setting up partnerships with other training centres, such as PGL Training based in Exeter, now offering NAPIT 17th Edition courses.
The most recent and extraordinary partnership NAPIT has arranged is with GET Training Ltd, who already operate a gas and electrical training centre from Wolverhampton, West Midlands and recently teamed up with the Home Office in 2007 to create the very first gas and electrical training centre on the premises of an Open Prison.
With recognised growing demand for gas and electrical engineers throughout the UK, along with the Prison Services working to obtain sustainable employment for prisoners due to finish their sentences, it was widely felt that qualifying appropriately skilled selected prisoners in the gas and electrical industries would offer them long term, flexible careers thus reducing the risk of re-offending. Alongside this GET Training offer gas and electrical training to the public and local engineers, allowing a range of people to utilise this facility.
Premises were sourced at HMP Spring Hill in Aylesbury, where GET Training invested in transforming, with the labour services of volunteer prisoners, a derelict boiler house into a fully operational gas and electrical training and assessment centre. Bricklayers, Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers, Painters and Decorators were all involved in the set up and created a fantastic facility for both prisoners and the public to utilise.
BLUE Flame Certification Ltd, a UKAS Accredited Certification Body, in conjunction with NAPIT, advised on the construction of the Assessment centre and finally gave approval ensuring that the facilities and equipment were to the correct standards required.
Successful candidates on completion of their training and assessment then receive a Part P Certificate of Competence from BLUE Flame Certification signifying their level of achievement, and forming the basis of requirements that many Competent Persons Schemes require for registration.
Registration with a suitable scheme will then allow individuals to self certify their work rather than having to involve Building Control within local authorities thus saving time and money.
Richard Payne, Scheme Manager for BLUE Flame Certification Ltd says:
“Our partner Assessment Centre, GET Training, invested a great deal of time and effort in bringing this project to fruition and they should be congratulated on their innovation and foresight in bringing this idea to conclusion. The concept of offering a career to members of society who may have had fewer opportunities than others is commendable, particularly offering training and assessment in trades that currently are desperately short of skilled and qualified people”.
Candidates from HMP have already completed the NAPIT Part P course and after assessment have successfully achieved their qualifications whilst enjoying the content and teaching methods. One candidate, Hugh Doyle, commented:
“My electrical knowledge before I took the course was limited and I lacked the confidence to take on even the smallest of electrical alterations. This was costing me a lot of time on jobs because of not being able to sign off my own work, I had to bring in a qualified electrician for even the smallest job. It seemed logical to invest in myself and take the Part P course.” He continued, “the training course and final assessment was run over 5 days which absolutely flew by. I surprised myself at how quickly I took the information on board. The training material was comprehensive and covered a wide selection of installations and testing. The staff were fantastic they really put me at ease after all I was a 40 year old going back to school! The facilities themselves were excellent and purposely fitted out to a high standard. Again I would like to thank the staff for making me welcome and taking the time to get me through the sticky bits.”
